Most people are just starting to get an idea of what SEO operations are about. The proliferation of SEO strategies through the past couple of years is enormous. The industry has grown so much, that even those who are not part of the industry or does not work for a website might have a vague idea of what it is all about.
SEO is not a recent development. It actually started way back in the mid-1990s when webmasters, people who manage websites, began to study search engines. Their studies showed that search engines had standards. By studying these standards, the webmasters could then tailor their website’s contents to improve its value from the search engine’s perspective.
It did not take too long for search engines to notice this. Every now and then search engines change some of their standards as well as formulate new algorithms. They do this in order to make it more difficult for websites to manipulate their positions on the search engine results pages (SERPs).
An overview of SEO’s history will show that today’s current internet climate is a result of the actions of websites and the search engine operators. Search engine operators will continue to change their systems in order to increase the validity and reliability of their search engines. Webmasters and other SEO practitioners will continue to study the search engines to find ways to streamline websites.
SEO operations today
SEO operations today are a lot more complicated than they were before many years ago. SEO tactics have changed as a response to the way search engine developers have been changing the way their search engines behave. Websites are constantly on the lookout for any recent development so they can constantly adapt to the ever changing web.
Keyword stuffing for example was an extremely popular tactic back in the day. This involved creating content that flooded the website’s content with the keywords or phrases that people use when they conduct a search. Search engines would be fooled into thinking that the website is extremely relevant considering the number of times the key phrase appears on the site. As it turns out, the website only used an exorbitant amount of keywords. Most of the content, if in fact there is any to be found, is either irrelevant or incoherent. This practice has fallen out of use as search engines have caught wind of this tactic and has then adopted new standards to avoid false positives.
Search engines are also taking proactive steps in order to discourage websites from using these bad tactics. Some websites are now banned by search engines if they are caught employing fraudulent SEO techniques.
More websites are also starting to rely on SEO companies to provide content for them. As the saying in the SEO industry goes “content is king.” This is very true. The SEO industry has grown so large that some websites are starting to outsource their SEO operations to Asia. Countries like the Philippines and India are the biggest winners since labor costs in those countries are lower compared to most western countries.
